This wire frame image is of two 15 liter LF Biolafitte fermenters that have a movable gantry built around them that holds shelving for feed vessels & stirrers, instrumentation cabinets, remote controlled feed pumps, substrate weight scales, two AXES frame assemblies with Air, O2, NH3 rotometers, O2 mass flow controllers, Methanol sensors, and +5, +15, -15 VDC power supplies.
Both the fermenters and gantry assembly are portable and can be moved around the pilot plant. These fermenters were involved, for several years, with lysine production by a thermophilic Bacillus and the utilization of methanol as the carbon source at 50 oC. All parameters measured and controlled in these systems were linked to a Data Logging and Supervisory Computer Fisher-Rosemount RS3 located in the pilot plant control room (26, 32, 68, 136, 195, 226, 230).
At right instrumentation is being connected to an Analog Devices uMac5000 measurement and control system. Instruments being interfaced with the uMAC5000 include thermocouples, pressure measurement, flow measurement and control valves for oxygen and ammonia addition, weight measurement, weight control, RPM monitoring and control.
This "black box" has the capability of measuring 38 process parameters while simultaneously operating 24 Proportional, Integral, Derivative (PID) control Loops. All information acquired by the uMAC5000 is transmitted to a "Host Computer" capable of intervening with "change of strategy" command decisions, which are then transmitted back using an RS422 serial interface (14, 26, 136, 195, 199, 226).
